Al Zampa Memorial Bridge Seismic Retrofit and Replacement Project
State of California Department of Transportation (Caltrans), Crockett and Vallejo, California, California
From early planning through construction, MIG provided public outreach and information services for the new Al Zampa Memorial Bridge, which spans the Carquinez Strait from Crockett to Vallejo, California. In the early phases of the project, MIG assisted the public and decision makers in evaluating and comparing the land use, transportation and environmental impacts of proposed alternatives for retrofitting or replacing the old Carquinez Bridge. MIG facilitated consensus for a preferred alternative and then staffed and managed the on-site public information office throughout construction. MIG helped to keep all parties informed of construction progress; responded to public and press inquiries; created and distributed public information materials; and organized public events for project milestones, including the opening celebration in November 2003. As the first new suspension bridge built in the U.S. since 1973, the project generated intense public and media interest.
