Tule Elk Child Development Center
San Francisco, California
Tule Elk Child Development Center is a public school located in San Francisco’s Marina District. MIG designed and oversaw the construction of this unique outdoor learning environment that balances child development, recreation, landscape architecture, and education. The site was transformed in into a 20,000-square-foot green space and curriculum resource. Where once there were chainlink fences and asphalt, there are now flowers, a vegetable garden, sand and water activities, an art terrace, a bike path, play structures, a butterfly garden, an exploration grove, and a grassy amphitheatre. The outdoor play and learning garden is the focus of a project-oriented curriculum that serves over 220 pre-school and K-3 school age children speaking 26 different languages. The design and structure of Tule Elk fully integrates children of all abilities into the learning environment. In collaboration with the Exploratorium, MIG recently completed plans for a new “Energy Garden” for the center, with solar collectors, a water collection system and foot pumps to extract the water for the garden.
