Director of Public Affairs

We are looking for an experienced Director of Public Affairs. You will be responsible for developing and implementing communications strategies and objectives for clients and MIG San Diego. You will serve as a senior project manager for clients and work to develop communication plans and implement a broad range of public relations activities. As a senior member of the business, you will also deliver new business and grow existing accounts.

Responsibilities

Public Affairs 

  • Direct international, national, and regional public relations and communications activities on a wide range of subjects 
  • Design and implement proactive and comprehensive relationship-building and communications plans on behalf of MIG clients 
  • Develop and place thoughtful news and feature material in local, national and international media outlets 
  • Lead the agency’s efforts to work with local & state elected officials, and train staff to support such efforts 
  • Understanding of land use planning, CEQA, NEPA and how to work with municipal agency planners 

Marketing & Communications 

  • Implement a broad range of public outreach, advocacy and education programs to help clients build community support, develop community coalitions and work with the creative team on developing effective informational materials 
  • Oversee the creation of innovative multimedia communications 
  • Develop, integrate, and implement PA & communications activities designed to enhance client services, initiatives or products 

Business Development 

  • Identify ways MIG can add value as a strategic business partner to our clients 
  • Provide strategic recommendations to existing or prospective clients to include new customers/audiences, innovative programs and market research 
  • Drive business development efforts within existing MIG accounts 
  • Assist the Principal to secure new clients, and proactively manage the prospect pipeline for new accounts 
  • Direct the production of strategic bids and proposals, from concept to implementation and post-sale follow-up 
  • Coach, mentor and train MIG team members to contribute to the sales and business development process  

Operations & Administration 

  • Work with the MIG leadership team to achieve organizational goals and objectives 
  • Build and support a strong, client-focused team across the entire agency 
  • Work in cross-functional teams across the agency, and across client accounts 
  • Coach and mentor staff 
  • Provide strategic recommendations and other support to the Principal as required

Education and Experience

  • BA/BS degree required, MBA preferred 
  • Minimum 5 years of marketing and public affairs experience 
  • At least 5 years of management experience, ideally over cross-functional teams 
  • Experience with government affairs, public outreach, strategic planning and political communications. 
  • Experience in integrating consumer marketing tactics and tools for community engagement 
  • Excellent writing, editing and presentation skills 
  • Knowledge of all communication platforms 
  • Demonstrated success in managing client relationships and anticipating client needs
