Mariners Village Landscape Rehabilitation
Located on the banks of Marina del Rey’s entry channel, Mariners Village is a 27-unit apartment community with commercial and recreational facilities, characterized by its distinctive coastal landscape. The 23-acre community, developed in 1969 by Selden and Ellis Ring, earned accolades in the early ‘70s as a tranquil seaside village focused on outdoor living with lush landscaping, serpentine pedestrian paths, meandering streams, and a koi-filled lagoon. Mariners Village is a significant expression of Marina del Rey’s landscape heritage and was recognized by the Los Angeles Conservancy as a “historic place that helps make Los Angeles County unique.” Today, much of the original landscape remains unchanged. The site benefits from mature trees and the strength of its core design framework—but the landscape is in need of rehabilitation.
MIG created a plan to refresh the public realm and residential amenities for today’s housing market, while maintaining the spirit of the original landscape vision. Proposed upgrades integrate seamlessly with the surrounding natural elements and include courtyards, innovative seating areas and shade canopies, contemporary paving and decking materials, pools, water features, sports courts, parks, improved paths, and a public waterfront “channel walk.” The landscape plan features drought-tolerant plantings, water-efficient irrigation, and preservation of mature trees.
The Mariners Village landscape rehabilitation project will benefit residents and the surrounding community with a visually appealing, functional, ecologically conscious environment that thoughtfully maintains the essence of the original cherished landscape.
