Heritage Park, Paddock Park, and Associated Streetscapes
As the “City of Cowboys and Culture,” Forth Worth takes pride in integrating authentic Western heritage with refined arts and culture. In this spirit of mingling the unexpected, the City launched an exciting convergence: a new park that seamlessly merges the downtown urban environment with nature and history.
MIG joined forces with the City of Forth Worth and Downtown Fort Worth Initiatives, Inc., to create an inviting, world-class community and civic space adjacent to the historic Tarrant County Courthouse. The project includes design for two parks, improvements to adjacent streets, and an enhanced entry into downtown.
Integral to the design is a safe, accessible—and playful—pedestrian path connecting Forth Worth’s vibrant urban downtown to the Trinity River and its native landscape. The site’s 75’ elevation change offers a distinctive terraced experience with multiple river overlooks, a deck-style “balcony” party and gathering space with attached stepped seating, a quarter-mile long elevated serpentine “canopy walk” accessible trail connection, “river stairs” seating, and recreation space. The park includes a recirculating waterfall-style fountain and a range of public spaces where visitors can play—including a zero-depth water plaza—along with opportunities to learn about the area’s history and come together for community events and celebrations. Beyond honoring the area’s history and natural setting, the design also anticipates and accommodates ongoing development of the surrounding districts.
Since 2021, MIG has continued to address numerous technical challenges presented by the site’s dramatic elevation change, multiple utility and development easements, and historic context while navigating a complex process with multiple agency, non-profit, and regulatory stakeholders. Construction documents are underway.
The park will enhance downtown livability and transform Fort Worth with high-quality civic spaces, distinctive pedestrian-friendly and accessible walkways, and vibrant connections to history and nature.
