Reflection Lakes Developed Areas Cultural Landscape Inventory

Reflecting on Reflection Lakes

Reflection Lakes, a scenic recreational area located along Stevens Canyon Highway in Mount Rainier National Park, has attracted visitors since before the park’s founding in 1899, and its popularity has only increased over the past 125 years.

MIG completed a Cultural Landscape Inventory for Reflection Lakes, focusing on the developed areas built between 1915 and 1965, many of which were implemented as part of the Park District’s national “Mission 66” initiative and retain that era’s mid-century modernist style.

This is the first time that the developed areas of Reflection Lakes have been researched, analyzed, and inventoried. MIG’s work provides the Park with important guidance for future planning, design, and maintenance of these areas.
