Tipsoo Lakes Developed Areas Cultural Landscape Inventory

Monitoring a Mile-High Meadow

Tipsoo Lakes is a scenic spot in Mount Ranier National Park, situated approximately a mile above sea level. Initially developed by the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) in the early 1930’s, the area provides parking and amenities and a trail network among two picturesque lakes. Tipsoo Lakes also offers the first view of Mount Ranier for park visitors, with the lakes in the foreground. The meadow surrounding the lakes blooms with wildflowers in the spring and summer.

MIG completed a Cultural Landscape Inventory (CLI) for the Tipsoo Lakes Developed Area, documenting the area’s cultural landscape characteristics and features, including a parking lot, picnic area, comfort stations, trails, and vegetation re-planting efforts completed by the CCC. The CLI provides the park with important guidance for future planning, design, and maintenance of Tipsoo Lakes.
