Project Associate – Planning and Urban Design

We are excited to be growing our Denver planning team and are seeking an entry-to-mid-level Planning & Design Project Associate to join our team of planners, urban designers and landscape designers in our San Antonio office. 

MIG supports a hybrid work-from-home/remote and in-office schedule and encourages in-person work for learning and team-building opportunities. This position will need to be available for some portion of in-person work each week for meetings in MIG's downtown San Antonio office, as well as site visits and client meetings throughout the City. 

Responsibilities

  • Collaborative Teammate: You will work as part of a cross-office, cross-discipline team that plans and designs with communities of all sizes across the United States for public and private-sector clients.
  • Project Work: You will support a team of planners, designers, and project managers in all aspects of project design and implementation, including community meeting design, preparation and facilitation, research and analysis, technical and policy writing, creation of highly visual materials, reports, and/or summaries, meeting support and logistics, content analysis, project administration and client interaction.
  • Project Types: The projects you will typically work on will include writing for comprehensive, downtown, corridor, strategic, and/or specific and current plans, parks and recreation system plans, and public engagement support, including designing and planning with online tools.

MIG works on projects nationwide; some travel, evening, and weekend work will be required for community engagement, site evaluations, or to meet deadlines. MIG encourages a sustainable and healthy work-life balance, and these excess hours can be offset during the week when possible.

 

Qualifications

To accomplish these responsibilities, you will be able to manage multiple tasks and deadlines, think critically and creatively, work as part of a collaborative team in an open environment, and maintain a sense of humor and camaraderie. In addition, you are expected to have some combination of the following qualifications: 

  • A Bachelor’s degree in in urban design or planning, public policy, or a related field. (A Master’s degree in these or a complementary field is a plus.)
  • Some relevant experience (internships OK) in land use planning, urban planning, urban design, policy, community engagement, master planning or a closely related field with an understanding of and commitment to quality, inclusive, community centered planning and design.
  • Ability to produce high-quality work products, including but not limited to graphics, charts, meetings, or research summaries; planning document and poster board layouts; and mapping.
  • Excellent skills in research, writing, analysis, document presentation and written and verbal communication. Graphics, graphic design, and document presentation proficiencies are a plus.
  • You have knowledge and demonstrated interest in the intersection of design, planning and equity and an ability to develop collaborative, productive, and respectful relationships with community members, organizations, and partners. MIG values and respects both lived experience as part of a non-dominant group (e.g., gender identity, sexual orientation, race and ethnicity, ability, etc.) and experience gained through study and work.
  • Knowledge about the principles and practices of land use planning at the city, county, regional and state level.
  • Software proficiency in the Microsoft Office Suite, and Adobe Creative Suite is required. Experience in ArcGIS Pro and/or SketchUp is a plus. 
  • You are an adaptable teammate who is willing to pitch in and help others. 
  • You can speak easily and clearly in front of groups and can participate in small and large group discussions.
  • You are local or willing to relocate to the San Antonio area to participate in work directly with our teams and clients. 
  • As a plus, you are bilingual with Spanish or other non-English language skills.
