A Common Thread, Rediscovered

San Gabriel River Master Plan

The San Gabriel River provides water, habitat, open space and recreation for 19 cities along its 58-mile corridor. It flows through spectacular natural areas in the Angeles National Forest as well as through concrete channels in some of the region’s most densely populated urban areas.

We led a multidisciplinary team to conduct planning, technical analysis and community consensus building for a new Master Plan. The river’s diverse stakeholders included all 19 cities, regulatory agencies, water professionals, the National Park Service, community and environmental groups, the LA County Departments of Regional Planning and Parks and Recreation, and the San Gabriel and Lower Los Angeles Rivers and Mountain Conservancy.

Our inclusive process led to a Plan that integrates newly identified recreation education, open space and habitat opportunities with the critical functions of flood protection, ground water recharge and stormwater conservation. Cities and the County are rediscovering a hidden treasure that ties together the communities along river.
